Over 1,000 Primary Students Explore “Green and Simple Urban Living”

The 20th Primary STEM Project Exhibition (PSPE), co-organised by the Centre for Education in Environmental Sustainability (CEES) and the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), along with other parties, was held today (5 May) at the Exhibition Gallery of the Hong Kong Central Library. Over 1,000 Primary 4 to 6 students and teachers from local schools, and schools from other cities in the Pearl Delta Region such as Zhongshan, Guangdong, Shenzhen and Macau, participated this year. With the main theme of Green and Simple Urban Living, the Exhibition displayed approximately 170 environmental science projects

‘At a time when science and technology are changing rapidly, with a pinch of creativity and a dash of enthusiasm people in Hong Kong can start with the basic needs of living – clothing, food, housing and transport – and execute the green mantra “reduce, reuse and recycle” to achieve the ultimate goal of green and simple urban living,’ said Professor Winnie So Wing-mui, Chairperson of PSPE Committee.

She added that all families accumulate excessive amounts of daily waste, from discarded lamps all the way to food waste, and from vehicle emissions to clothing that no longer fits. In response to the determination to implement a green lifestyle, students from Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China shared their creativity in relation to resource saving and waste reduction in green living at the Exhibition.

Participating students discussed their project outcomes, covering such areas as how they applied STEM skills, the scientific principles and concepts underlying their proposals, and the tests and experiments they used to explore the conventional way of green living. In recognition of their creativity as participating schools, Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) Primary School, Kowloon Women’s Welfare Club Li Ping Memorial School, T.W.G.Hs Yiu Dak Chi Memorial Primary School (Yuen Long), Pui Ching Middle School Macau and Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School, St. Paul’s Co-Educational College Primary School, Tin Shui Wai Catholic Primary School, Sun Fong Chung Primary School and C&MA Chui Chak Lam Memorial School, among others, received Adjudicator Awards.

Representatives of Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) Primary School investigated the most suitable material to manufacture the “eco-heat pad”, and students from Kowloon Women’s Welfare Club Li Ping Memorial School used fruit to design an “eco-packing for instant noodles”. In addition, students from T.W.G.Hs Yiu Dak Chi Memorial Primary School (Yuen Long) designed a “Moisture Absorption” to help dehumidification. Students from Pui Ching Middle School Macau tried to use natural ingredients in making pure moisturizer. Students from St. Paul’s Co-Educational College Primary School tried to make a cooker to prevent heat loss. Both Students from Tin Shui Wai Catholic Primary School, Sun Fong Chung Primary School and C&MA Chui Chak Lam Memorial School used natural ingredients in making a DIY anti-mosquito product, hair dye and tooth paste respectively.

Lastly, Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School’s “Moss Filtering System” helps to provide a sustainable environment for marine animals.

The Exhibition was co-organised by CEES and SES at EdUHK, the Chief Executive’s Award for Teaching Excellence Teachers Association, the Education Bureau, the Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education, Hong Kong Education City Limited and the Hong Kong Science Museum. Approaching the event’s 20th Anniversary, a celebration will be held at The Education University of Hong Kong on 26 June 2017 to showcase the outstanding STEM projects of the awarded school teams, and students will compete for 20th Anniversary Awards.
