Policy Dialogue Series, 2020-2021:Housing Affordability: Can there be breakthrough solutions?
You or your representatives are cordially invited to cover the seminar of the policy dialogue session, entitled “Housing Affordability: Can there be breakthrough solutions?”, co-organised by the Department of Asian and Policy Studies (APS) of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) and the Division of Public Policy (PPOL) of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). During the session, Research Chair Professor of Public Administration Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung will be joined by Professor Donald Low, Professor of Practice at the Institute of Public Policy of HKUST, to share their insights on the topic.
In 2019, Hong Kong was ranked the world’s least affordable housing market for the 10th consecutive year in the annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey. A household would need to save for 20.8 years to be able to afford a home based on median affordability scores. Inadequate housing has led to the proliferation of subdivided units and soaring demand for public housing, which is in short supply due to the lack of developable land. This dialogue will look at the crux of the housing, land and planning issues, as well as explore policy and institutional possibilities for the way forward. Lessons will also be drawn from Singapore’s successful national housing policy. Details are as below:
