Scholars and Experts Gather at EdUHK to Discuss Gender and the Changing Face of Higher Education in the Asia-Pacific
Scholars and experts from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, mainland China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan and the US gathered at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) today (27 October) for the Asian University Leaders Program (AULP).
Hosted by the Centre for Greater China Studies and the Department of Asian and Policy Studies at EdUHK, and the Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies at Lingnan University (LU), and supported by The United Board for Christian Higher Education Asia, the AULP provided a lively platform on which scholars could share their valuable insights and discuss gender analyses to learn lessons on gendering institutional management and programs in higher education throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Over 30 participants from universities in southern East Asia joined the Program for professional training and dialogue with leading scholars and experienced university administrators.
Professor Lui Tai-lok, Vice President (Research and Development) of EdUHK, and Professor Joshua Mok Ka-ho, Vice President of LU, welcomed participants in their opening remarks. Dr Angela Wong Wai-ching, Vice-President of the United Board, shared her view on gender equality in Asian higher education. Professor Deane Neubauer, Co-director of the Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership (APHERP) and consultant at the East West Centre, discussed the assessment of data on gender issues in higher education in the Asia-Pacific region. Professor Peter Mathieson, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong, discussed gender equality issues in Hong Kong universities.
Following the AULP, invited scholars and experts from the field of gender and higher education will continue their in-depth discussion at the 2016 Senior Seminar: Gender and the Changing Face of Higher Education in Asia Pacific (28 to 29 October), hosted by the Centre for Greater China Studies and the Department of Asian and Policy Studies at EdUHK, and the Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies at LU. The seminar is co-organised by the Asian Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership (APHERP) and supported by the One Asia Foundation.
On the first day of the Seminar, Professor Deane Neubauer, representing APHERP and the East-West Centre, and Dr Alfred Wu Muluan, representing EdUHK, will give welcoming remarks to the participants. Professor Deane Neubauer will introduce APHERP and reflect on gender and higher education issues within the Asia-Pacific region. Professor Denise Cuthbert, Dean of the School of Graduate Research at RMIT University, will provide critical perspectives on recent research and policy in relation to gender and nation building through innovation in Australia. Professor Linda Li Chelan and Dr Iris Kam Chui-ping of City University of Hong Kong will discuss the relationship between gender, education and earnings mobility through a case study of Hong Kong.
