EdUHK Signs an MOU with Shandong University to Foster Educational Research Collaboration
President of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) Professor John Lee Chi-Kin led a delegation to Shandong University (SDU) on 23 July. The delegation received a warm welcome from Mr Ren Youqun, Party Secretary of SDU. Both parties exchanged views in a cordial and constructive manner, engaging in in-depth discussions on deepening cooperation in the field of education. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further strengthen collaboration between the two universities, covering the areas of educational research, academic exchange, international cooperation and student exchange.
During the meeting with Professor Lee, Mr Ren extended a warm welcome to the EdUHK delegation. He introduced the scale, distinctive features and recent achievements of SDU, with a particular focus on the upcoming establishment of the Higher Education Institute. He sought support from EdUHK to jointly promote educational research.
Professor Lee expressed his pleasure in meeting with Mr Ren. He conveyed his confidence that under Mr Ren’s leadership, the university will soon build up its education and research sectors. Professor Lee noted the abundant cooperation opportunities in the field of education between the two universities and their solid foundation for collaboration in various areas, and highlighted EdUHK’s focus on international Chinese education and traditional Chinese culture. He suggested that both parties engage in in-depth cooperation, including organising student-exchange programmes to SDU for experiential learning.
During the meeting, both parties also conducted extensive discussions and reached several agreements on areas of collaborative programmes, student exchanges, scientific research cooperation and co-hosting international seminars. Professor Lee and Mr Ren then signed the Memorandum of Understanding.
The EdUHK delegation also included Professor Michelle Gu Ming-yue, Dean of the Graduate School; Professor Si Chung-mou, from the Department of Chinese Language Studies; Ms Helen Gai Huixia, Director of Communications and Engagement; Dr Maxwell Ho Chun-sing, Associate Co-Director of the Academy for Educational Development and Innovation; and Ms Emily Fong Chi-wai, External Affairs Manager in the Office of the President. The delegation visited the Shandong University Museum on 23 July and learned about the rich history of SDU, which traces its origins to the official Shandong University Hall, established in Jinan in 1901, during the 27th year of the Guangxu Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Over its more than a century-long history, SDU has seen significant developments, along with the country’s progress. It has nurtured numerous renowned scholars and made a substantial contribution to the nation's development by cultivating many outstanding students. SDU is recognized as one of the top universities directly administered by the Ministry of Education of China.
The delegation also visited SDU's Center for Research and Experience of Traditional Chinese Culture. The center employs modern technological methods, blending education and entertainment to set up immersive cultural experiences and teaching scenarios. Through this detailed combination and immersive participation, it offers visitors a condensed, multifaceted cultural experience. The center emphasises the importance of Confucianism and other outstanding aspects of traditional Chinese culture. The center stresses hands-on participation by visitors, supplemented by classroom learning and themed seminars to explore a panoramic, multi-dimensional cultural experience and teaching model. It was an enlightening experience for the delegation.
Also joining the meeting were Mr Wu Qubo, Director of Hong Kong and Macau Division I of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office; Mr Xing Zhanjun, Assistant to SDU President and Secretary of the Party Working Committee of the Qingdao Campus; Mr Wang Zhipeng, Director of the Department of Discipline Construction and Development Planning of SDU; Mr Han Bo, Acting Dean of the Graduate School of SDU; Mr Zheng Jingbin, Dean of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of SDU; Mr Xu Xifeng, Director of the Office for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of SDU; Ms Ma Xiaole, Director of SDU's College of International Education; and Mr. Ji Rui, Deputy Director of the Office for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of SDU.
