EdUHK Elite Athletes Heading to the Paris Olympics Striving to Perform Their Best
The 2024 Paris Olympics will commence on 26 July. Nine elite athlete students and graduates from The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) will represent the Team China and Hong Kong, China in the Olympics. They will compete for medals in six major sports: table tennis, badminton, cycling, artistic gymnastics, rowing and artistic swimming.
The nine elite athlete students and graduates include Doo Hoi-kem and Lee Ho-ching, students in the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme. They won a bronze medal in the women's team table tennis at the Tokyo Olympics, which was the first-ever Olympic medal for the women’s table tennis team of Hong Kong, China.
Yeung Nga-ting, another student in the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme, is on the women’s doubles badminton team of Hong Kong, China. She won the Denmark Masters and the Polish Open titles in 2022.
Ceci Lee Sze-wing and Vincent Lau Wan-yau, also students in the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme, are members of the cycling team of Hong Kong, China. Ceci Lee won the gold medal in the women's individual road cycling event at the 14th National Games, and Vincent Lau earned the bronze medal in the men's individual time trial event at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year.
Chiu Hin-chun, currently pursuing a Master of Social Sciences in Sports Coaching and Management degree, made Hong Kong history this year by winning the Lightweight Men’s Single Sculls at the 2024 World Rowing Cup II in Lucerne, Switzerland, becoming the first rowing athlete in Hong Kong to win gold in an international competition.
Shek Wai-hung, a graduate of the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme, will represent the Hong Kong team in the Olympics again this year. He scooped two gold medals in the vault at the World Challenge Cup Competition in 2019 and was a gold medallist at the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games.
Wang Qianyi and Wang Liuyi, twin sisters representing the Chinese women's artistic swimming team, will pursue the Doctor of Education (Chinese prospective) programme in September. They won gold medals in the artistic swimming team technical at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, as well as gold medals in duet free and duet technical in the Championships.
President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin extended his best wishes to the elite student athletes and graduates heading to the Olympics. “It is a huge honour to represent the nation and Hong Kong SAR in the Olympics,” he said. “I hope that our athletes will compete with unwavering determination, demonstrate their exceptional abilities and strive for remarkable achievements that will bring pride to our motherland and Hong Kong SAR."
In its pledge as an "Elite Athlete Friendly University", EdUHK is committed to providing a flexible admission and learning mechanism to help elite athletes pursue dual career development. EdUHK was the first UGC-funded university to sign a collaborative agreement with the Hong Kong Sports Institute, providing elite athletes with an opportunity to receive university education and continuing education. Since 2010, EdUHK has admitted close to 140 elite athletes in various academic programmes.
