EdUHK Media Reception: Introducing Educational Professional Development of the Future
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) hosted a Spring Reception today (21 February), at which President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin and the senior management team, together with new faces in teaching and research (Chair Professor of Biology and Neuroscience Professor, Ken Yung Kin-lam, and Chair Professor of Early Childhood Education, Professor Philip Li Hui), briefed the media on the latest developments at the University.
As part of the further enhancement of its teaching and research capabilities and exploration of new research areas, EdUHK recruited over 40 academic staff last year. The year 2024 marks the University’s 30th anniversary, and a series of celebratory events under the tagline ‘Education Talent Virtue’ will therefore be held to promote the spirit of EdUHK’s educational heritage. These events include a banquet in November for distinguished members of the community, colleagues from the education sector, and EdUHK faculty and staff.
Other developments include the restructuring of multiple subordinate centres into two newly established academies, to better synergise interdisciplinary expertise. The Academy for Educational Development and Innovation focuses on classical Chinese and Chinese language education, intangible cultural heritage, life education, professional and vocational education, and special needs education. It includes the Centre for Chinese Classical Education, the Centre for Religious and Spirituality Education and the Institute of Professional and Vocational Education and Lifelong Learning.
The Academy for Applied Policy Studies and Education Futures, meanwhile, aims to strengthen AI and digital development, STEAM education, and foster applied policy studies, national security and legal education. The academy incorporates the National Security and Legal Education Research Centre, which was established last month with Professor Gu Minkang as its Director.
In response to strategic curriculum development, the University will further expand its offering of taught postgraduate programmes. The new Master of Science in Educational Neuroscience will help frontline educators develop a deeper understanding of knowledge and equip them with the capacity to translate scientific insights into recognition of and respect for learners' challenges, including dealing with dyslexia, autism and ADHD.
To provide practical skills and an updated understanding of public policy and management, the University will offer a new Master’s programme, the Executive Master of Public Administration and Leadership, for those currently working in the civils service and those who wish to work in the sector.
EdUHK will also launch the Centre for Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, which will foster close collaboration with higher education research centres in the Mainland, the region, and internationally. The Centre will also offer a new Master of Arts in Global Higher Education programme from 2024/25.
Professor Lee said that EdUHK was a young and vibrant university, which had inherited a rich educational legacy. He added that the University would continue to nurture professional talent to societal needs, by enhancing EdUHK research capabilities. He hoped it could help shape Hong Kong as a diversified regional and international education hub.
