EdUHK Forum: Dialogues between Practitioners and Scholars on Hong Kong Football
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held a forum on Hong Kong Football today (24 May), providing a platform for local frontline practitioners, academics, students and journalists to exchange views on and review the current context, policies and social implications of Hong Kong football from various perspectives.
Co-organised by the Centre for Greater China Studies (CGCS) and the Department of Social Sciences (SSC) at EdUHK, the six-session forum attracted a turnout of over 100 participants, covering issues ranging from the development of local football, government policies and management, and the identity issues of football players to fan culture, gender and football, and youth development in Hong Kong’s context.
Attending the forum, Professor Lui Tai-lok, Vice-President (Research and Development) cum CGCS Director, said that “the encouraging performance of Team Hong Kong in recent international tournaments has been in the limelight and the team has been gaining appreciation from Hong Kong society. Known as the Football Kingdom of the Far East, the local football industry has been a witness to change and a pivotal part of local studies on society, culture and politics”.
Professor Lui added that the forum provided a platform for stakeholders and scholars to examine local football from both macro and micro perspectives, which will deepen the public’s understanding of football in Hong Kong and bring about possible research networks for further exchanges and collaborations. Looking ahead, the CGCS and SSC will continue to explore the field of Hong Kong football, with a view to enriching ongoing research into local history, culture and politics.
