Senior Ambassadors from CFAU Visit EdUHK as Part of Comprehensive Collaboration
Two eminent Ambassadors from the China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU), Ambassador Huo Yuzhen, Former Ambassador of China to the Czech Republic and Romania, and Ambassador Yue Bin, Former Ambassador of China to Georgia and Tajikistan, visited The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) on 26 March, to deliver keynote speeches focusing on the cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries, and the Sino-Russian relationship in the new era.
They shared their observations and insights on the opportunities and challenges facing Chinese foreign affairs today and addressed students’ questions about trending topics in international relations. This visit is an important step in implementing the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed earlier this month in Beijing, aimed at promoting in-depth collaboration in Chinese foreign affairs education.
EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, Vice President (Academic) Professor May Cheng May-hung, Vice President (Administration) Dr Tom Fong Wing-ho, and Associate Vice President (Mainland Engagement and Development) Ms Helen Gai Huixia warmly welcomed Ambassadors Huo and Yue, along with Director-General Counsellor Wang Jian of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR, and Mr Kan Sijin, Director of the President’s Office of CFAU.
Ambassador Huo delivered a speech titled “Advancing Major-Country Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics: Forging New Progress in China-CEEC Cooperation”. She stated that cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries is deepening based on long-standing friendly relations, adhering to principles of equality and mutual benefit. Significant achievements have been made in various fields, including trade, finance, technology, innovation, culture and education, and new areas of collaboration will continue to expand in the future.
Ambassador Yue’s speech, titled “New Era of Sino-Russian Relations amid a Century of Change”, outlined the historical development, characteristics, strategic value, and contemporary significance of Sino-Russian relations. He noted that as China and Russia steadily advance cooperation in traditional sectors like trade, aerospace, and energy, they are also becoming new partners in fields such as scientific research, digital economy, green low-carbon initiatives, artificial intelligence, biomedicine, and e-commerce. Both countries are committed to fulfilling their responsibilities as major powers by closely coordinating in multilateral platforms, uniting in international and regional affairs, and jointly addressing various threats and challenges to maintain global strategic balance and promote regional stability and development.
Professor Lee expressed his gratitude for the visit by Ambassadors Huo and Yue, as well as for CFAU’s swift action following the signing of MoU with EdUHK. He remarked that arranging these distinguished ambassadors to launch the Chinese foreign affairs education at EdUHK marks a leap toward strengthening collaboration between the two universities.
“Today’s lecture is not only an academic exploration of diplomatic wisdom but also an enlightening lesson in national affairs, broadening the horizons of EdUHK faculty and students while deepening our understanding of China’s foreign affairs strategies,” he said.
Earlier this month, EdUHK signed a MoU with the CFAU to jointly establish the “Institute for International Relations of The Education University of Hong Kong”. They will engage in a series of collaborative efforts in curriculum development, compilation of instructional materials, academic research, international forums and student-teacher exchange activities. EdUHK looks forward to collaborating with the CFAU to provide more opportunities for faculty, students, and Hong Kong youth to understand major-county diplomacy with Chinese characteristics and broaden their international perspectives.
