Multi-cultural campus backdrop

 

Introduction

Hong Kong is a multi-cultural society, with different ethnic minorities, including Indonesians, Filipinos, British, Indians, Pakistanis, Nepalis, Japanese and Thais, taking Hong Kong as their home and some taking roots in Hong Kong for generations. All ethnic groups have unique characteristics and cultures. Mutual respect, knowing each other and understanding of relevant issues are important for cultural exchange and ethnic integration. This page has been set-up to enhance a multi-cultural and inclusive campus. 

  

Culture and Lifestyle Understanding Training

EdUHK is committed to providing comprehensive values-based training that reaches every member of our university community. We regularly conduct workshops that promote our core institutional values of diversity, respect, and cultural sensitivity, as documented in our Equal Opportunities Policy. These workshops, including the "Workshop on Respect Diversity and Racial/Cultural Sensitivity" and "Workshop on Racial Harmony and Cultural Sensitivity," are delivered in partnership with the Equal Opportunities Commission and are supported by accessible learning materials for ongoing reference. These trainings and relevant materials are available to all students and staff at the university.

 

Staff Training Programme 

One of our faculty hosted an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) retreat on 25 June 2024. The event brought together 40 members of staff, including department heads, faculty EDI committee members, departmental representatives and administrative staff, and faculty staff. The retreat featured an array of expert speakers from both local and international institutions, who addressed key issues essential to creating an inclusive academic environment. The main discussion topics included: 

 

  • EDI issues in Hong Kong 

  • Underrepresentation of senior women academics 

  • Experiences of gender diverse and sexual minority groups 

  • Mainland Chinese students’ acculturation 

  • Creating a racially inclusive campus

Student Programme

The Global Affairs Office of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) hosted the Cultural Showcase 2024 on 17 October 2024 to foster campus internationalisation and cultural integration. Students from over a dozen countries and regions, including mainland China, Finland, Germany, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Spain, Switzerland, Tajikistan, the Netherlands, as well as local students, came together to celebrate and share their unique cultural heritages at EdUHK’s Central Plaza. As part of the ‘Arts for All’ project, a Thangka workshop was held for 30 students on 14 March 2023. This workshop provided students with a new perspective on appreciating different cultures. The ‘Arts for All’ is a project designed to promote cultural diversity and inclusion. Students who participated in the project have gained valuable skills, such as leadership, activity design and project management. They have applied these skills to community-engaged art projects in seven primary schools, benefitting 413 schoolchildren in 2022/23.

The Student Affairs Office launched the ICAC Ambassador Programme in collaboration with the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) to encourage tertiary students in the promotion of integrity. More details are available at: https://www.eduhk.hk/sao/en/info/campus_life/icac_ambassador.

 

Our training approach is truly inclusive, ensuring that all stakeholders—from administrative staff to faculty members and students—receive appropriate guidance on creating a welcoming, diverse campus environment. This commitment is further reinforced by our robust Equal Opportunities Policy and dedicated Equal Opportunities and Disability Access Officers who provide ongoing support and guidance. 

 

Impact metrics such as participation rate and feedback surveys of all training programme and workshops would be systematically recorded and evaluated for continuous enhancement.

 

By embedding these values across all levels of our organisation, we create a campus culture where diversity is celebrated, inclusion is prioritised, and respect is practised daily.
