Innovation, Technology and Industry Secretary Visits EdUHK to Learn of Innovation and Research Development

The Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Professor Sun Dong visited The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) on 10 July 2024, to meet and discuss with senior management and research project leaders to learn more about the University’s innovation technology and research achievements, as well as the latest developments.

 

Accompanied by President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, Associate Vice President (Quality Assurance) Professor Susanna Yeung Siu-sze, Director of University Research Facility of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence cum Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence Professor Xu Guandong and  Director of Knowledge Transfer Professor Stephen Chow Cheuk-fai, Professor Sun visited the Future Classrooms on EdUHK’s Tai Po Campus, after attending the launch ceremony for the free mobile app ‘EdUHK-Tencent JoyLearning PTH Journey’.


Professor Sun was introduced to the University’s achievements in the fields of research and development, as well as the positive results obtained in research funding, including highlights in areas such as data science, artificial intelligence, social behaviour and environmental science. He also learned about the collaborative projects between EdUHK and local, mainland and overseas institutions.


Furthermore, Professor Sun gained an understanding of the overall situation of EdUHK’s innovative technology, through a small exhibition on technology transfer and international innovation and technology awards. 


He also learned about six different sectors where EdUHK is applying innovative technology, artificial intelligence, big data and 3D metaverse technology to enhance learning efficiency, empower special education, assist the visually impaired in learning music, and improve nutrition and performance management for athletes. He expressed his appreciation for the achievements and encouraged EdUHK scholars and researchers to continue their efforts in innovation and to reach new heights in science and technology.


At the EdUHK-Tencent JoyLearning PTH Journey app launch ceremony, Professor Sun noted that in its 2022 Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint, the HKSAR Government announced four broad development directions including enlarging the innovation and technology talent pool to create strong impetus for growth. He added that in addition to strengthening students' language abilities, promoting STEM education was particularly important, and that education was the cornerstone of social development and technological advancement. He hoped that more institutions and industries would work together in the future to jointly promote technological innovation and educational development. Through collaborative research, they could develop more educational products and application solutions to meet students' needs, thereby improving the quality of teaching and cultivating more outstanding talent with international perspectives and innovative capabilities. He also encouraged students to actively participate in various innovation and technology activities to enhance their practical skills, broaden their knowledge horizons, and prepare for future development.
