Thanks to a generous donation of HK$12.4 million from Ms Pau Chun-ping, The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has established a new centre dedicated to promoting Chinese classical learning and traditional values and virtues, through a wide array of learning activities and joint research projects in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Chinese classical learning is a specialised field of study on Chinese traditional culture and the ‘five books and six arts’ of Confucianism. The following are the priority areas of EdUHK’s Centre for Chinese Classical Education (CCCE):

• Seminar series on Chinese classical learning
  Presenting a series of seminars on Chinese classical learning in collaboration with different academic departments at the University; and bringing together renowned academics from the four cross-strait regions. These seminars will be open to EdUHK staff and students, as well as members of the public, free of charge.
• Large-scale research project
  Conducting a series of research projects led by EdUHK scholars under the theme “Life Education through Chinese Culture and Virtues” to investigate the relationship between Chinese virtues, character building and student learning. The objective is to establish an educational framework to promote Chinese culture and virtues among primary and secondary students.
• Teacher Development Scheme of Five Chinese Classics Core Curriculum in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area
  Promoting Chinese cultural studies with an emphasis on classics, historical figures, etiquette, martial arts and calligraphy across the education sector. There will be a wide range of activities, including teacher-training classes, life education experience tours, study tutorials and inter-school Chinese classical learning competitions across the GBA.

EdUHK Council Chairman Dr David Wong Yau-kar thanked the donor for her support of the University. He said, “As a teacher training-focused university, it is our mission and responsibility to promote Chinese classical learning as well as the long and profound history of the Chinese culture. CCCE is set to have a positive impact on our country, society and the University.”

EdUHK President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung said, “CCCE has a two-fold mission to develop the moral character of students and to enhance their knowledge of history, culture and ethics. We will start with basic education, mainly through varied teaching and research activities and experiential learning. We also look forward to collaborating with GBA cities in promoting Chinese classical learning.”

Ms Pau Chun-ping said she was delighted at EdUHK’s commitment to fostering Chinese classical learning and research promotion, adding that she had high hopes for CCCE in upholding the late Mr Fung Sun-kwan’s aspiration of developing youngsters’ moral character and positive attitude to life, through the promotion of traditional culture and values in Hong Kong and the country.
