EdUHK Joins Hands with Tencent to Stage 2024 Hong Kong Inter-Primary School Putonghua Competition Award Presentation Ceremony

To promote the development of Putonghua education locally, The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) and Tencent Foundation have co-organised the 2024 Hong Kong Inter-Primary School Putonghua Competition in June and July. The aim is to kindle local students’ interest and passion for language learning, to enhance their proficiency in Putonghua speaking, through integrating education and entertainment.

 

Participants needed to recite or present a short video, narrating stories of traditional Chinese culture, with the winning entries selected through experts review and public voting.

 

The award presentation ceremony was held on EdUHK’s Tai Po Campus today (24 September). Those in attendance included EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, Vice President of Public Affairs at Tencent and Chief Executive of the Tencent Foundation Mr James Li Tsz-Shu, and Senior Product Designer, Tencent IEG Social Value Exploration Center Ms Liu Qing, Associate Co-Director of Academy for Educational Development and Innovation of EdUHK Professor Li Hui, Executive Co-Director of Centre for Chinese and Multilingual Education Development Dr Jin Jing, Director of School Partnership and Field Experience Office (SPFEO) Dr Kevin Kam Wai-keung, Associate Director of SPFEO Ms Mandy Au Yuen-yee, and Professional Consultant of SPFEO Mr Langton Cheung Yung-pong. 

 

Highlights from video entries submitted by local primary schools and the outstanding works performed by the winners, were exhibited at the ceremony, demonstrating the unique interpretation of Chinese culture by the new generation. The winner of the junior group expressed her aspirations for the future through the designated recitation material. Meanwhile, the winner of the senior group conveyed the spirit of younger generation pursuing their dreams through Lu Yu’s story of promoting tea culture.

 

In his speech, Professor Lee pointed out that Hong Kong possesses the unique advantages of strong support from the Motherland and close connections to the world. To seize the opportunities presented by the country and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, it is suggested that the people of Hong Kong be biliterate and trilingual. 

 

He added that the competition embodies the University’s 30th Anniversary theme of ‘Education Talent Virtue’, with the aim of deepening the understanding of Chinese culture among the younger generation and cultivating well-rounded talent for both Hong Kong and the country.

 

Mr James Li stated that Tencent's partnership with The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) innovatively integrates technology into professional education. By utilizing advanced artificial intelligence to test the verbal ability of students, the 《趣學普通話》Putonghua learning platform presents the education sector with a new model that merges learning with entertainment. The platform aims to deliver an engaging and enjoyable learning experience and encourage students' curiosity about Chinese traditional culture.


This competition is one of the flagship events under the project ‘EdUHK-Tencent JoyLearning PTH Journey’, and also one of the celebratory events for the 30th anniversary of EdUHK. “EdUHK-Tencent JoyLearning PTH Journey” —Mobile Application to Foster Putonghua Learning Proficiency was held earlier.
