The Centre for Classical Chinese Education of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held “Literary and Martial Arts: Calligraphy Education Achievement Awards Ceremony” on 26 September, to promote national studies and Chinese culture through calligraphy education. The event also celebrates the 75th Anniversary of National Day and the 30th anniversary of EdUHK.

The ceremony was held at the EdUHK North Point Study Centre. Deputy Council Chairman Professor Terence Chan Ho-wah, President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin attended the ceremony with several guests, including the Deputy Division Chief of Social Work Division of the Hong Kong Island Sub-office of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mr Luo Wenzhen, Chairperson of the Fung Sun Kwan Chinese Arts Foundation, Ms Pau Chun-ping, Publisher of the magazine “Hong Kong Art”, Mr Zhang Jinzhou, President and Chief Planner of the magazine “Hong Kong Art”, Mr Liu Weizhong, Deputy General Manager of “Hong Kong Art”, Ms Ye huiya, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong Golden Bauhinia Art Research Institute, Mr Lai Rongchun, Chairperson of the Hong Kong Hard Pen Calligraphists’ Association, Mr Lui Chiu-wing, and principals and teachers from all the base schools.

In his welcoming speech, Professor Chan stated that calligraphy was an important part of Chinese culture, carrying profound history and cultural spirits. Calligraphy education can cultivate students' understanding and appreciation of classical Chinese culture, inspiring their love and interest in traditional culture. “Learning calligraphy enables students to experience traditional virtues such as respecting teachers, filial piety, and fostering good relationships, thereby shaping good character and moral cultivation through subtle influence,” he said.

Professor Lee explained at the ceremony that the event had double meanings, celebrating both the 75th anniversary of National Day and the 30th anniversary of EdUHK. “Calligraphy showcases the core values of Chinese culture and promotes the spirit of Chinese culture through the art of writing,” he said. In addition to cultural activities, EdUHK will also hold an international seminar on the topic of Chinese martial arts and school-based martial arts activities in the future.

Ms Pau Chun-ping hoped students would understand more about national studies through these meaningful cultural events organised by the Centre for Classical Chinese Education, such as introductory courses on national studies, “Experiential Learning on Professional Ethics for Teachers” course, and other classes on national studies. It will cultivate their interest in historical culture, enabling them to become talents with the essence of traditional Chinese culture and contribute to the country.

The Centre for Classical Chinese Education of EdUHK organised a school calligraphy education programme with “Hong Kong Art” earlier, where EdUHK provided teachers and resources for primary and secondary school students to experience the profound connotation of Chinese culture through calligraphy art. Additionally, the University jointly held the “75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China cum the 30th Anniversary of The Education University of Hong Kong Calligraphy Competition” with Hong Kong Art and the Hong Kong Golden Bauhinia Art Research Institute, and co-organised the “Hong Kong Primary and Secondary School Hard Pen Calligraphy Competition” with the Hong Kong Hard Pen Calligraphists’ Association. The latter attracted 420 public participants and 98 schools across Hong Kong, with nearly 2,200 entries submitted. The judges selected 136 winners from a large number of works, and the awards ceremony was held on 26 September.
