EdUHK Holds Orientation Days President Encourages Freshmen to Seize Every Opportunity and Embrace Challenges
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held a two-day orientation event (14 and 15 August) on its Tai Po campus, attracting approximately 600 freshmen. President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin encouraged the students to learn from the spirit of perseverance and persistence demonstrated by athletes, to seize every opportunity university life offers, and to prepare themselves for future challenges.
Addressing the event on 15 August, Professor Lee welcomed the students to the EdUHK family. He stated that this year marked the 30th anniversary of EdUHK, adding extra significance to their new chapter in the University . “For the EdUHK 30th anniversary, we have adopted the theme ‘Education Talent Virtue’. Our hope is that the freshmen, during their time at EdUHK, will not only excel academically, but also prioritise their whole-person development and well-being. By doing so, they will become individuals with talent and virtue, contributing to Hong Kong, the nation, and the world,” he said.
In light of the outstanding performances of EdUHK's nine elite athletes at the Paris Olympics, Professor Lee encouraged the new students to embrace the athletes’ spirit of perseverance and resilience. He said, “Some of you will become future teachers; whereas the others will shine in different sectors. I hope you seize every opportunity during your university and personal life, and brace yourselves for the challenges ahead, just like these athletes.”
He advised the students to make full use of the resources available at the university, expand their social networks, broaden their horizons, actively explore, establish positive values, and cultivate an optimistic attitude. “Echoing the development of Hong Kong as an international education hub, we will witness substantial growth in the non-local student population and hence a more diversified campus community. You will play a part in it – be our ambassadors, and introduce them our city.”
The Orientation Days activities included tours of campus facilities and student halls, peer mentor sharing sessions, student performances, and ice-breaking games to foster connections among new students. The various interactive activities on site brought the new students together, with laughter and cheers, creating a warm and harmonious atmosphere.
