EdUHK’s Conference on The Social, Emotional, and Moral Development of Young Children
You and your representatives are cordially invited to Conference on “Soft Skills” in Early Childhood Education: The Social, Emotional and Moral Development of Young Children to be held at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) on 11 May (this Thursday).
It has recently become a trend for parents to focus on developing a child’s “winning qualities” at an early age. The emphasis is placed on academic matters while giving little attention to the young child’s social, emotional and moral development. It is, however, important to note that non-cognitive “soft skills” affect children’s growth and learning, laying the foundation for their holistic development and equipping them with positive attitudes to face challenges in life.
At the conference, renowned Professor in Education, Professor Yuko Hashimoto of Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan, will introduce Japanese preschool system and play-based curriculum that emphasises nurturing children’s emotions, motivations and attitudes. Overseas and local scholars will also be invited to discuss the roles of family, schools and communities in relation to this topic. Teaching strategies and skills will be shared at the event.
Speakers of the conference include Dr Eva Lau, Dr Margaret Lau and Dr Amanda Wong, Assistant Professors of the Department of Early Childhood at EdUHK. Topics of discussion will include aggression in early childhood, prevention and intervention strategies, use of musical games to nurture young children’s social competence, and children’s stress and coping during the transition to primary schoo, among others.
